Sports, Health, And Life United

I created Dr. Soccer Mom to explore the inspirational intersections between sports, health, and life. After high school, I attended Duke University for undergraduate studies in 2000. Then I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 2005. My experiences at those two institutions developed my education and commitment to becoming a physician. While at these schools, I fell in love with basketball for its ability to inspire athletic excellence and unite people through a winning team and community. Education and sports shared a common theme: determination and resilience were essential in the pursuit of excellence and for the win. I belonged to a group of exceptional students, athletes, and professionals driven to succeed. The college basketball powerhouses also demonstrated how essential a team was to accomplish greatness and to unite its community.

After medical school, I moved to Minnesota for dermatology residency training. I eventually became a mom and am raising two student athletes with my husband. As a practicing dermatologist and proud parent, I learn every day from our children. Now I have discovered the many parallels that exist between life, sports, and medicine. Not only are these parallels helping us raise our children to become developmentally skilled athletes who value education and training, but they also help me continue to grow as a doctor and parent. I share these common themes between life, sports, and medicine so that others may apply them to live their best lives.

My Dr. Soccer Mom key points to leave you with:

  • In medicine, we learn and train for years to treat diseases and help people heal. The foundation is education.

  • In sports, we develop skills and train over time to perform competitively and unite our communities. The foundation is athleticism.

  • In life, we learn and grow on the journey individually and communally to develop and contribute our talents. The foundation is humanity.

Let's inspire our children and each other to remain driven and to work together to improve our lives.
